California Suite April 2015

This hilarious and at times touching piece comprises four short plays which take place in the same rooms at different points in the year.

In ‘Visitor from New York’, Hannah and Billy, a divorced couple, come together to make plans for their daughter’s future. We get a glimpse of the spark that once existed between them as well as an understanding of the very different paths they have chosen post separation. Can they put their own feelings aside to make the right decision for their daughter?

‘Visitor from Philadelphia’ begins with Marvin much the worse for wear, waking to find an almost unconscious hooker in his bed, with his wife Millie on her way to join him to attend his nephew’s bar mitzvah. Marvin’s desperate attempts to extricate himself from this compromising situation approach the ridiculous. Once the truth is out, Millie holds the cards.

It is not just American guests who visit Rooms 203-204. In ‘Visitors from England’, it is Oscar Ceremony day and Diana is an excitable nominee, bristling with nerves and insecurities. Accompanied by her patient husband Sidney, they prepare to attend the event. In the aftermath we learn more about their marriage and the mutual affection which underpins it, despite the question mark about what Sidney does in the afternoons.

Finally in ’Visitors from Chicago’ we are introduced to Mort and Beth and Stu and Gert, longstanding friends at the end of a gruelling and ill-tempered holiday together. The action begins in the aftermath of a particularly stormy tennis match during which Beth has injured her ankle. Mort is uncompromising as to who might be to blame for the injury.

The action takes place in a suite of the Beverley Hills Hotel, in 1976.
